Crafting a Mission that Resonates: Business VPMOSA
As parents, we often guide our kids with simple, clear directions: "Share your toys", "Finish your veggies", "Time for bed". Simple, right? Think of your business's mission statement in the same vein - it's a straightforward guide for where your business is heading and how it plans to get there. You're essentially telling your business, "This is where we're going, kiddo!"
Why Craft a Stellar Mission?
First things first, let’s break down why you need a strong mission:
Direction: A mission provides a roadmap. It tells everyone - your team, your customers, and yourself - what your company stands for and aims to achieve.
Motivation: On those tough days, your mission is the 'why' that keeps you pushing forward.
Decision-Making: It becomes a litmus test for making business decisions - "Does this align with our mission?"
The Nitty-Gritty of Crafting Your Mission:
Clarity is Key: Be specific about what your business does and for whom.
Passion-Fueled: Let your genuine excitement and commitment shine through.
Stay Short & Sweet: Remember, it's a mission statement, not a mission novel!
Incorporating VPMOSA: When formulating your mission within the VPMOSA framework, remember that the mission is the 'M'. It falls right between your broad Vision (the big dream) and your Objectives (the measurable steps to achieve it).
Mission Creation Mini-Exercise:
Identify Your Business's Core Purpose: Beyond making money, why does your business exist?
📝 Example: "To empower small business owners."Define Your Business's Activities: What are the primary activities or services your company provides?
📝 Example: "By providing affordable marketing tools."Combine Them: Take your core purpose and your primary activities and merge them into one cohesive statement.
📝 Example Mission Statement: "Our mission is to empower small business owners by providing them with affordable marketing tools."
Relatable Mission Examples:
Airbnb: "To help create a world where you can belong anywhere."
Slack: "To make work life simpler, more pleasant, and more productive."
Now, imagine trying to direct your kiddos without those simple guidelines. Chaos, right? That's precisely how a business feels without a well-defined mission. So, pull out that pen, gather your thoughts, and craft a mission that resonates and directs!
Remember, your business is like your child. It needs direction, love, and, most of all, a sense of purpose. Go on, give it the mission it deserves!
Here's to crafting with purpose
P.S. Parenting tip: Crafting a mission statement for your family can be just as rewarding. Give it a try! 😉
